Ambitious billionaire financier, Jules Mendelson (Jason Robards) and his elegant wife, Pauline (Jill Eikenberry) entertain the rich and famous at their mountaintop estate, Clouds. One night, Pauline's best friend, Hector Paradiso (Paxton Whitehead) is murdered. Jules, acting to protect his own interests, changes the facts of Hector's death from murder to suicide. But a young writer from New York, Philip Quennell (Peter Gallagher) is suspicious of Jules' account and determined to uncover the truth. As events unfold, it is tough, yet vulnerable Flo March (Rebecca De Mornay), Jules' mistress and 'the inconvenient woman', who will pay the price. Flo threatens Jules' very existence-his money, his career and even the fate of his stepson. Thrust into the ruthless world of wealth, power and class, she faces an unimaginable struggle for survival.
